A few weeks ago our church started collecting a children's offering to try to teach the kids the concept of giving. They sure do enjoy going and putting a dollar in the basket every Sunday but I am not really sure they understood why they are doing it.
Last Sunday we told the boys to get a dollar from their piggy bank so they could give it to the church and Jacob said, "If I keep giving money from my bank I am going to run out." Kenny and I tried to explain that when you give to the church God will give you twice as much back not only in a monetary way. Jacob was not understanding and he said, "no one is giving me money." We told him we promise that he will not run out of money so he went ahead and gave the dollar. After church when we went to Pepa's for Sunday dinner and it just so happened that Pepa gave Jacob $2 for loosing his tooth and so we demonstrated how he gave a $1 and got $2 this day. So he was kind of ok with having to give that $1. At the dinner table that night Jacob said he wanted to start doing chores around the house so he wouldn't run out of money in his bank so I said ok. We decided that if they did 5 chores a week and did one Helping Hand they would get $5 per week. We told them that they had to give $1 to church $2 in their bank and $2 they could save to buy anything they wanted. Jacob said, "OK, but if everyone keeps giving money to the church they are getting a lot of money, why can't we just keep it?" Kenny explained to him that the church uses the money to help people in need and Jacob asked him with what needs. We then told him you can give some of it to the church and you can give some of it to charities that help people and even sometimes you can save it and buy food to give to the food pantry(they did this in Sunday School class last year) and maybe even adopt a family at Christmas time and buy them presents. I think he finally understands why we should give the money to help others and I think it will make even more since when we let him do something with his money to help others.
They are doing really good on their chores this week. They have to make their bed and pick up their rooms before school everyday. Jared helps set the dinner table at night and Jacob clears it after dinner. Jared gathers all the bathroom trashes and Jacob takes the trash out(with help-he was excited about getting to do this one-wonder how long that will last). Jacob folds all the socks and Jared puts them in every ones dressers. Then they each have to do one Helping Hand a week by helping someone do something without being asked or doing something nice for someone with out being asked.
They are growing up so fast...I have two little men instead of babies now.
