So they told us this storm would make us forget about the Christmas eve snow storm. Did we believe them....not so much. Should we have believed them....YES!
It start raining on Thursday, January 28th and was right around 32 degrees out. I had a doctor apt in Lawton at 11AM that day. It wasn't supposed to start getting bad till around noon or after. On the way to the doctor it started sleeting a little. When I got out of the doctor about an hour later we were starting with the freezing rain. By the time I got home the trees where starting to crack and break. Around 3pm the electricity went off. By about 5pm the boys had played every board game they could find and wanted to watch TV or play the Wii. It was hard to make them understand that it took electricity. One time Jacob asked if we could move the Wii to his room and play it on his TV. He also asked if we could make popcorn. Kenny cooked the kids nachos and hot ham and cheese sandwiches on the grill for dinner and we ate by candle light. By 6:30 it was dark outside and dark inside so we decided to head to bed. The boys made a pallet on the floor of our room because we have a gas heater in our bathroom....so we were able to stay warm. The next morning we got around and cleaned the house and then took all the food out of the fridge and put it outside to keep it cold. By about 3pm we all wanted to take a shower so we headed to moms because they have a gas water heater. They also had a generator so after we stayed for a couple of hours and the boys were able to watch TV we decided there was no way we were going to go back home. Work and school was closed Friday and thru the weekend. Monday work was back up with electricity but still no school for Central. We ended up being without power till the following Thursday, February 4th around 7pm that night. School resumed on Monday the 8th. Mom and I left Thursday morning for Chicago (different post) and left all the guys at home with no power.
I definitely appreciate electricity a lot more having to be without it for 7 days. My parents ended up being without power until Monday, February 8th. The whole town of Marlow was without power for about 11 days. They are still taking the power down places to restore more power. Trying to get gas in those days was hard. There was one place in Marlow on a generator and two places in Duncan you could get gas. I have never seen anything like this. I think the ice was probably 2-3 inches thick in spots.
